History of PQ-NE Action Group

The PQ-NE Action Group, a nonprofit formed in 2007, advocates for residents in northeast Rancho Peñasquitos amid major redevelopment. Early on, the group successfully collaborated with the City of San Diego and developers to scale down and improve the Cresta Bella apartment project.
After the Doubletree Golf Course closed in 2015, the group raised concerns about the proposed high-density Junipers housing project, particularly its impact on wildfire evacuation in a community with only one exit. They became active safety advocates, engaging officials, hosting meetings, and speaking publicly.
Despite efforts to influence later developments, including the Millennium PQ project and the Junipers proposal, the group saw limited success with city approvals. In 2021, after the Junipers project was permitted, they filed a lawsuit citing environmental and safety concerns. In 2023, a judge ruled the project’s environmental review flawed, halting construction.
A settlement reached in August 2023 resulted in several safety and community improvements, including plans for a roundabout, potential new evacuation routes, expanded park space, added trees for noise and pollution buffering, and funding for emergency preparedness infrastructure.
